The Nightmare Fair Novelisation of unmade TV story, published
1989 Doctor: 6
featuring
the Toymaker, Peri
Adapted
by Graham Williams from his own script.
Informed guess Takes place in Blackpool; self-dated Spring, ten years
after July 1978 CE.
The
Celestial Toymaker is a malevolent
immortal not subject to the laws of physics. His raison d’etre is tempting
others into playing games they lose, becoming his playthings as a penalty. He
takes the suitably decadent form of an educated British orientalist, dressed in
gaudily Chinese-styled robes. Craig Stevens and Gary Russell provide him with
feverish backstories. It’s what he would have wanted.
Michael Moorcock's 1988 novel Mother London hops to and fro over the lives of three Londoners from the Blitz to the late 1980s. They are telepathic and understandably spend some of their time in the mental health system. I could link it to Doctor Who narrative via the Psi-powers sequence of novels towards the end of the New Adventures, but it fits seamlessly into the narrative's dream of London as a crucible of significance.
