featuring Charley

Written by Ian Mond and Danny Oz.

Informed guess Takes place in Melbourne, Victoria, and New York, NY. Madonna and Gary Oldman are still celebrities; the level of technology suggests not before the late twenty-teens CE. The distinct oddness of events in this story may be partially explained by their taking place during the six-month reign of the Monks.

The Enemy of the World   TV Story, broadcast 1968                          Doctor: 2

featuring Jamie, Victoria

Written by David Whitaker, script edited by Peter Bryant.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth. A scrap of newspaper used for packing is dated August 2017 CE, which is described as the previous year. It was probably published not too long before. It is noticeable that a World Zones Authority was not public knowledge by 2018. I speculate that following the events of Cat’s Cradle: Warhead ten years previously, figures including and similar to those conspiring to achieve digital immortality in that novel set the Authority up to supervise human affairs, judging, understandably, that institutions such as the national governments, the UN, the World Economic Forum and the IMF had slid into a reality-television arena where decisions had to prioritise popular theatre over actual problem-solving. Individuals like Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, Christine Lagarde and George Soros were by no means without agency, but essentially specialists, as opposed un-“news”- worthy generalists in the exercise of power, like Ramon Salamander, Alexander Denes and Giles Kent.

The Book of the Enemy   Short story, published 2018                                        Doctor: 0

Featuring Sherlock Holmes, the Second War in Heaven

Written by Andrew Hickey, with introductory material by Michael Simpson.

Contemporary to publication Takes place in London. This is a story within a story within a story. The innermost one is contemporaneous with the siege of Sydney Street, when Tom is a youngish man with a crush on Sherlock Holmes; in the next, Tom is a centenarian and the narrator in his forties; in the outermost the narrator himself is an old man, so I am assuming it is set when published. The War of the Worlds and The Prisoner of Zenda are both part of Holmes’s original reality.
