Then: The Doctor’s Timeline, between the First and Second Battles of Gallifrey

 

(say, two thousand years. Figures necessarily get a bit arbitrary at this point. The Doctor spends over a century exiled on Earth as an amnesiac after The Ancestor Cell. He arguably spends another century in suspended animation in The Sleep of Reason. He spends six hundred years on Orbis (Orbis). And then there’s Russell Davies’s own-brand UNIT dating controversy, in which the Doctor tells Rose he is only nine hundred years old, shortly, we may infer, after the Second Battle of Gallifrey in Rose: in flat contradiction to Time and the Rani for a start. I am counting these nine hundred years separately, by a mechanism I shall discuss when I get to it. Altogether this adds up to over seventeen hundred years. Bear in mind too that some time must have passed between the Doctor deciding to restore the Chronarchy from backup in his own memory (The Gallifrey Chronicles) and its operating similarly to the way it did before the first Battle of Gallifrey (Blood of the Daleks). (Although the restored Gallifrey starts off inhabited by almost every Time Lord who ever lived and who had been downloaded to the Matrix: a Capitol of the Saved, if you like.) As I say, I propose rounding this up to a couple of millennia.)

He presumably removes his arm. Whatever the other vaguely described effects of the climax of The Ancestor Cell, we may assume it kills him. And, as a half-Tellurian, he wakes in the City of the Saved on Resurrection Day, with all his memories restored and a full tally of limbs (The Book of the War). It is from this point, I suggest, that he starts counting the nine hundred years that he tells Rose is his age. He rejoins Faction Paradox as Godfather Halfling, because, after all, he started it.
