Takes place in Arabia, London and the USA, but pivotally the expedition that Sir Richard Burton describes, appears to be his journey to Harar in Ethiopia and back in the winter of 1854-5 CE. Andrew Hickey teasingly implies that the Shift might have been a Wartime iteration of the Doctor, but it must be pointed out the Great House agent’s suggested name, Sh’vay, is an English transliteration of the original (Czech) pronunciation of Cwej. For the Faction, this takes place after its restoration in The Judgement of Sutekh, but I don’t think it does for Lolita, as I can’t see that Horus’s plans for her would include leaving her free to take control of universal history. Also, I can’t see that the Faction would send Burton to meet her unless they had an endgame in view, as they would if they came from her future. From Rachel’s account, Nelson and his campaign seem to be a Faction operation that Lolita hijacks, but I question whether she is a reliable witness. Granted that she is the embedded reporter that history produces to replace Sh’vay, but she also appears to be the prime suspect for the murders accompanying Nelson’s campaign. Her story of them will presumably break immediately after the end of the novel, feeding into the paranoia that Lolita is using to justify her crackdown. Her gay serial dating gives her a modus operandi, she is known to the last victim, she helps drive Dave to assassinate Nelson. I conclude that she is a vampire, and/or an agent of Lolita.

Informed guess Recounted in Camden, an
area of London, on a Christmas, three or four years after the death of John
Morrison’s grandfather, who he remembers, as a near or actual octogenarian,
from the middle years of the preceding century. The undertaker’s top hat means
it can’t be earlier than the nineteenth; the literary style places it earlier
than the twentieth.
