Then Again: The Sixth Centiaeon
Earth Short
story, published 2005 Doctor: 4
Written
by Jim Mortimore.
Takes place in New York, NY and elsewhere on Earth;
the Doctor dates it as 50,000,000 CE.
The Fate Of The Earth
By this time, much of the Earth’s surface is glass.
Its dominant species are giant ants, which farm large non-sentient food-animals
descended from Tellurians. These survive until Earth’s final destruction in the
far future, and beyond. The narrator thinks he can see New York beneath the
glass, but he is not well educated and has possibly not left the city before in
his life. I think he is likely to mistake any city of rectangular towers laid
out on a rectangular street plan for New York, and the city he can see is a lot
less than fifty million years old.
