Things That Doctor Who Writers Who Want To Set Things In “The Present” Should Find Difficult To Ignore. Though Quite Likely They’ll Just Pile More Stuff In.

BATTERSEA POWER STATION INSTANTANEOUSLY REPLACES THE BUILDING IT WAS DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR. 1 CANADA SQUARE HAS ITS PYRAMIDAL ROOF REPLACED BY A SPIRE.

The Valeyard is a possible version of the Doctor from between his twelfth and “final” regenerations, so technically, an alternative version of the eleventh Doctor? But the term “final” is ambiguous here: viewers of The Trial of a Time Lord would have assumed that the twelfth regeneration would have been a euphemism for death, and maybe the corrupt High Council who gave him corporeal form would have assumed the same. In any case, it is typical of the Time Lords to create a Mr Hyde who is duller and less adventurous than his Dr Jekyll.

Plastic Millennium   Comic story, published 1994                                  Doctor: 7

featuring the Nestene Consciousness, Mel

Written by Gareth Roberts.

Takes place in the UK; probably finishing in the early hours of January 1st, 2000 CE.

Things That Doctor Who Writers Who Want To Set Things In “The Present” Should Find Difficult To Ignore. Though Quite Likely They’ll Just Pile More Stuff In.

MANY CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY ARE GASSED BY AUTONS AT A NEW YEAR’S PARTY AND KIDNAPPED.

Doctor Who TV story, broadcast 1996                                               Doctors: 8, 7

featuring the Master, Grace, with the Daleks (informative mention)

Written by Matthew Jacobs.

Takes place in San Francisco, Ca; ending self-datedly in the early hours of January 1st 2000 CE.

That Time I Nearly Destroyed the World Whilst Looking For a Dress

Short story, published 2004                         Doctors: 1, 2, 5

Featuring the Time Lords, Polly, Ben, with Susan, Ian, Jamie, Adric, Tegan, Peri, Erimem, Benny, and possibly Allen Road (glimpse)

Written by Joseph Lidster.

Concludes outside London (possibly Allen Road), self-datedly in the early hours of 2000 CE; having taken in continental Europe and the Pacific. The female figure claiming to be God could be Iris Wildthyme, Compassion, Lolita, Death or indeed, I suppose, God. (The Divinity, rather than the AI operating system of the Worldsphere, who would be constrained from this sort of behaviour by the People’s non-aggression pact with the Time Lords.)

Millennium Shock   Novel, published 1999                                  Doctor: 4

featuring Harry, the Voracians, and Sarah Jane (glimpse)

Takes place in London, Buckinghamshire and Siberia; ends self-datedly on January 1st, 2000 CE.

Things That Doctor Who Writers Who Want To Set Things In “The Present” Should Find Difficult To Ignore. Though Quite Likely They’ll Just Pile More Stuff In.

THE MILLENNIUM BUG ACTUALLY CAUSES CHAOS, INCLUDING A STOCK MARKET CRASH.

The Body Politic   Comic story, published 2013                                        Doctor: 8

Featuring Grace

Written by Scott and David Tipton.

Takes place partly in San Francisco, Ca in February 2000 CE. Grace leaves linear time, being aboard the TARDIS when it dematerialises.

The 2000 film Uzumaki (‘Spiral’) shows the inhabitants of a Japanese town being drawn into grotesque fates as they are pulled emotionally and physically to spirality. This feels like a Tellurian incursion of The Enemy, or even a non-sentient side effect of the Second War in Heaven itself.

The Mayfair Monster – Part Two   Audio drama, released 2014          Doctor: 0

Featuring Dorian Gray

Written by Alexander Vlahos and Jolyon Westhorpe.

Informed guess Takes place in London, concluding some time after The Mayfair Monster – Part One.

The Sisters of Paradox Self-published internet story, published no later than 2013                                                                                                                              Doctor: 0

Featuring the Vampires, Sarah Jane, Faction Paradox, Sam, with K9 III (glimpse), and UNIT (informative mention)

Written by Robert A Black.

Takes place in Sunnydale, Ca; self-dated 2000 CE, and in Buffy continuity, between two episodes that the Buffy Wiki places in March or April of that year. Stretching out in both directions from here, you can insert the chronology of Buffy The Vampire Slayer if you choose, but as the crossover currently consists of this admittedly pretty clever piece of fan fiction and a single panel in a Buffy comic, I shan’t myself.

Old Soldiers Audio drama, released 2000                                            Doctor: 0

Featuring UNIT, the Sontarans

Grave Matter   Novel, published 2000                                              Doctor: 6

featuring Peri

Written by Justin Richards.

contemporary to publication Takes place on the Dorsill Islands, off the coast of England. Self-dated the twenty-first century, and technically, of course, 2000 CE was the last year of the twenty-first century. Sir Anthony Kelso retired in March, and seems to have been on the island a few months. Rather sweetly, Sir Anthony assumes an identity and gives his pseudonym a knighthood as well. Bless.

Exile   Audio drama, released 2003                                                           Doctor: Unbound

Takes place in Scotland. Lethbridge-Stewart, bearded, is undertaking odd jobs for the

authorities, so I’m placing it near Minuet in Hell.

Monsters Short story, published 2000                                                       Doctor: 7

featuring Ace

Written by Stephen Cole as Tara Samms.

Informed guess Takes place in the UK; self-dated 2000 CE, in or close to winter.

Things That Doctor Who Writers Who Want To Set Things In “The Present” Should Find Difficult To Ignore. Though Quite Likely They’ll Just Pile More Stuff In.

ALL THE VOWELS DISAPPEAR

Tom’s Story: Part One   Short story, published 2016                               Doctor: 0

Written by Iain McLaughlin.

Informed guess Takes place in Boston, Mass. We learn in The Last Pharaoh that Tom came to university in 2012 CE: his family were well off, so plausibly after a gap year. No date is given or implied for his parents’ separation: now seems not implausible.

Reunion   Short story, published 2000                                                       Doctor: 2

Written by Jason Loborik.

Informed guess Takes place in London; self-dated December, sixty years after the Blitz.

Featuring Iris Wildthyme, with UNIT (glimpse)

Written by Simon-Bucher-Jones

Takes place partly at a UNIT Christmas party; “Who Let The Dogs Out” is described as a popular hit, suggesting 2000 CE.
