Things
That Doctor Who Writers Who Want To Set Things In “The Present” Should Find
Difficult To Ignore. Though Quite Likely They’ll Just Pile More Stuff In.
BATTERSEA
POWER STATION INSTANTANEOUSLY REPLACES THE BUILDING IT WAS DEMOLISHED TO MAKE
WAY FOR. 1 CANADA SQUARE HAS ITS PYRAMIDAL ROOF REPLACED BY A SPIRE.
The
Valeyard is a possible version of
the Doctor from between his twelfth and “final” regenerations, so technically,
an alternative version of the eleventh Doctor? But the term “final” is
ambiguous here: viewers of The Trial of a
Time Lord would have assumed that the twelfth regeneration would have been
a euphemism for death, and maybe the corrupt High Council who gave him
corporeal form would have assumed the same. In any case, it is typical of the
Time Lords to create a Mr Hyde who is duller and less adventurous than his Dr
Jekyll.
Plastic Millennium Comic story,

featuring
the Nestene Consciousness, Mel
Written
by Gareth Roberts.
Takes
place in the UK; probably finishing in the early hours of January 1st, 2000 CE.

in the early hours of 2000 CE; having taken in continental Europe and the
Pacific. The female figure claiming to be God could be Iris Wildthyme,
Compassion, Lolita, Death or indeed, I suppose, God. (The Divinity, rather than
the AI operating system of the Worldsphere, who would be constrained from this
sort of behaviour by the People’s non-aggression pact with the Time Lords.)

The Body Politic Comic story,

Scott and David Tipton.
Takes place

The 2000
film Uzumaki (‘Spiral’) shows the inhabitants of a Japanese town being
drawn into grotesque fates as they are pulled emotionally and physically to
spirality. This feels like a Tellurian incursion of The Enemy, or even a
non-sentient side effect of the Second War in Heaven itself.

Written by
Robert A Black.
Takes
place in Sunnydale, Ca; self-dated 2000 CE, and in Buffy continuity, between
two episodes that the Buffy Wiki places in March or April of that year.
Stretching out in both directions from here, you can insert the chronology of
Buffy The Vampire Slayer if you choose, but as the crossover currently consists
of this admittedly pretty clever piece of fan fiction and a single panel in a
Buffy comic, I shan’t myself.

contemporary to publication Takes place on the Dorsill Islands, off the coast of
England. Self-dated the twenty-first century, and technically, of course, 2000
CE was the last year of the twenty-first century. Sir Anthony Kelso retired in
March, and seems to have been on the island a few months. Rather sweetly, Sir
Anthony assumes an identity and gives his pseudonym a knighthood as well. Bless.

Informed guess Takes
place in Boston, Mass. We learn in The

off, so plausibly after a gap year. No date is given or implied for his
parents’ separation: now seems not implausible.
