Smith and Jones TV
story, broadcast 2007 Doctor: 10
Featuring Martha, the Judoon
Written by Russell T Davies.
Takes place in London and on the Moon, twelve hours before The Lazarus Experiment. There was much controversy online during
Series Three over whether Russell T Davies was being racist in suggesting that
the Doctor had been in love with Rose but was not in love with Martha,
suggesting she was second best: is it, the online asked, ‘cos she is Black? It
is not for me to say whether Davies was being racist here, though I think I am
entitled to ask, if the Doctor had been in love with Rose, what would have been
stopping him from saying so? I think it far more likely that he developed an
excess of sentimental non-sexual affection towards her while rather basking in
the fact that she had fallen in love with him: the inarticulable emotion he
struggled with was not love but guilt. What I did notice, however, is something
I saw none of those vociferous about racism mentioning: that after Micky in Rose and Donna’s fiancé in The Runaway Bride, Martha’s dad
represented Davies’s third comically feckless and unsatisfactory
boyfriend/husband of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity in two years. Once would be
happenstance, three times strikes me as a racialist trope. Anyway, in this
story Martha leaves linear time, being aboard the TARDIS when it
dematerialises.

featuring
Ace, Allen Road, with ?Victoria
informed guess Takes place in the USA,
Turkey and London, ending self-datedly in October, in the early 21st
century CE. I think there is a reasonable
chance Miss David is Victoria living under an assumed identity following the
events of Downtime twelve years previously. And when the New
Adventures came out, I thought it possible that Mrs Woodcott – a chemist
specialising in psychotropic drugs, who is working for the British government
in War Child and who evidently knows the Doctor – might be Jo, having
become a drugs engineer during her marriage to Cliff Jones. Twenty-first
century appearances of Jo however are not really compatible with this
suggestion…but could Victoria be Mrs Woodcott as well as Miss David? Her father
brought her up to have a thorough scientific education, her assumed identities
could well be guarded by the British state in return for favours, and the two
characters do not appear together, Mrs Woodcott appearing in this novel only
during Justine’s hallucinatory dreams. Moreover, Mrs Woodcott has some psychic
abilities, which could well have been caused by Victoria’s long association
with the Great Intelligence in Downtime.
