When the Germans address Lethbridge-Stewart as “Brigadier-General”, I assume that this is a translation of Generalmajor, which is also one rank above Colonel, although a Major-General in anglophone armies is two ranks above Colonel, like Scobie, Lethbridge-Stewart’s superior in Spearhead From Space and The Eye of the Giant.

Featuring Faction Paradox, the War in Heaven, with Compassion (glimpse), and the Yssgaroth (informative mention)

Written by Simon Bucher-Jones and Jonathan Dennis.

Takes place variously, reiteratedly and largely not at all, but Scarrat’s scrying, which is not overwritten, takes place in Liverpool, self-dated May 1946 CE. I have listed Compassion as a glimpsed character as, according to the text, she is, but I suspect she is actually a major character, being the former nechronomancer Philetes. Although Scaratt arranges for Ella Stanton to have a new life from his sense of moral obligation to her, he reveals at the end of the novel that his romantic/erotic fixation on her was a lie, to mislead the tribunal and his numerous other potential enemies. Another lie, then, must be his dismay at finding that Philetes has been substituted for her. Why, indeed, would anybody do that? He identifies Philetes as the woman he has felt most intently about…which is exactly how he talks about his brief encounter with Compassion near the novel’s beginning. I contend that the happy conclusion of the Brakespeare’s voyage is a plan devised and executed by Scaratt and Compassion to protect its billions of crewmembers from further exploitation by the Wartime powers after the voyage’s sixth – probably – iteration.
