Then Again: The Late Twenty-Forties

The Word Lord   Audio drama, released 2008                                        Doctor: 7

featuring Ace, Hex

Written by Steven Hall.

Informed guess Takes place beneath Antarctica; self-dated 2045 CE.

Inflicting Christmas   Illustrated short story, published 2020                Doctor: 12

Featuring Bill

Written by Dave Rudden.

Takes place in Dublin; self-dated Christmas 2045 CE.

Eucatastrophe   Charity short story, published 2001                                Doctor: 8

Featuring Compassion, the remembered Fitz

Written by Mags L Halliday.

Informed guess Takes place in twenty-first century CE London, where the environmental crisis is at its height.

Ghost In the Machine   Audio drama, released 2013                       Doctor: 3

Featuring Jo

Written by Jonathan Morris.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth, some decades into Jo’s future.

Sun Screen   Comic story, published 2007                                                 Doctor: 10

Featuring Martha

Written by Jonathan Morris.

Informed guess Takes place above and on the Earth; self-dated the twenty-first century. Global warming has not yet been reversed.

Jonah   Short story, published 2004                                                            Doctor: 8

Written by Todd Green.

Informed guess Takes place mainly in Southall; if the earlier sections take place contemporaneously with publication, then the later sections take place in the 2040s CE.

The Bounty of Ceres   Audio drama, released 2014                   Doctor: 1

Featuring Vicki, Steven

Written by Ian Potter.

Informed guess Takes place on Ceres; self-dated the twenty-first century CE, say some twenty years before The Wheel of Ice.

Couch Potatoes   Short story, published 2010                                          Doctor: 0

Featuring Iris Wildthyme

Written by Scott Liddell.

Informed guess Takes place in Switzerland, and on Zuplon. Matter transmission is commercially plausible, and search engines connect to the Omninet, so I’m placing it in the mid-twenty first century CE. True, Panda communicates with Jenny, who is from the early twenty-first century, but she is a time-traveller. Also, the Omninet may preserve online identities so that one may communicate them and make requests of them.

The Hole Truth   Illustrated short story, published 1980                         Doctor: 4

featuring K9 II, Sharon

Written by Jenny O’Connor.

Informed guess Takes place partly in the outer Solar System, in the late 2040s CE.

Terpsichore, The Muse of Dance: Teach Yourself Ballroom Dancing

Short story, published 2003  Doctor: 6

Featuring Peri (informative mention)

Written by Robert Shearman.

Informed guess Takes place in the UK. Ends some seventy-five years after the early 1970s CE.

The Time of the Daleks   Audio drama, released 2002           Doctor: 8

featuring the Daleks, the William Shakespeare thing, Charley

Written by Justin Richards.

Informed guess Takes place in London and Warwickshire; self-dated the mid-Twenty-First century CE. Unnatural History discusses how the Doctor (temporarily as it turned out) removed the Daleks from history by collapsing their timeline into paradoxes, implicitly keeping them out of the Second War in Heaven. His action here, transforming a major Dalek force into a temporal paradox, slingshotted in the Vortex, may well be an example of this.

Event Horizon (1997) describes how an interstellar spacecraft using experimental space/time distorting technology finds itself in a hellish realm that might plausibly be that of the Yssgaroth (The Pit). It is set in 2047 or 2048 CE.

Blood and Ice   Comic story, published 2015                                             Doctor: 12

Featuring Clara, a Clara sprinter

Written by Jacqueline Rayner.

Takes place in Antarctica; self-dated 2048 CE.

Doomed   Short story, published 2014                                                        Doctor: 0

Featuring Iris Wildthyme

Written by Richard Wright.

Informed guess Takes place on Mars, before The Seeds of Death; Mars is being colonised by commercial concerns. The behaviour of Iris’s opponent is consistent with his being the Celestial Toymaker, but there is insufficient evidence for certainty.

Kill the Moon   TV story, broadcast 2014                                                  Doctor: 12

Featuring Clara

Written by Peter Harness, script supervised by Steven Moffat.

Informed guess Takes place principally on the Moon; self-dated 2049 CE.
