Then Again: The Late Sixth Millennium

Once in a Lifetime   Comic story, published 1989                                    Doctor: 7

Written by John Freeman.

Takes place on the implausibly named planet Galactica Minor. The presence of a “Metebelis Bar” in Solar City suggests, vaguely, a time not too distant from Doctor Who and The Planet of the Spiders.

Prisoners of Fate   Audio drama, released 2013                            Doctor: 5

Featuring Nyssa, Tegan Turlough

Written by Jonathan Morris.

Takes place partly on Valderon, twenty-five years after Cobwebs.

Children of the Revolution   Comic story, published 2002                   Doctor: 8

Featuring the Daleks, Izzy

Written by Scott Gray.

Informed guess Takes place under the sea on Kyrol, self-dated “decades” after Doctor Who – The Evil of the Daleks.

Tragedy Day: Prelude   Illustrated short story, published 1994              Doctor: 7

featuring Ace, Benny

Written by Gareth Roberts.

Informed guess Takes place on Frinjel 87 and Ollerill, shortly before Tragedy Day.

Tragedy Day   Novel, published 1994      Doctors: 7, and 1 (informative mention)

featuring Ace, Benny, and Susan, Barbara (glimpse)

Written by Gareth Roberts.

Takes place on Ollerill; dated 5597 CE by Parkin in Ahistory.

The Feast of the Stone   Online short story, posted 2004                 Doctor: Unbound 9

Featuring Unbound Master

Written by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright.

Arbitrary placement Takes place in an unidentified environment, containing a psychic vampire.

The Envelope Please   Charity short story, published 2018                     Doctor: 7

Featuring Ace

Written by Jonathan Dennis.

Arbitrary placement Takes place at the 78th Intergalactic Arts and Sciences Awards.

Home Truths   Audio drama, released 2008                                        Doctor: 1

featuring Steven, Sara

Written by Simon Guerrier.

Informed guess Takes place in East Anglia; the Earth has been a near-wilderness for over a thousand years.

The Fate Of The Earth

Tellurian civilisation already seemed in a pretty bad way at the turn of the millennium; the Solar Flares that caused most of its inhabitants to flee clearly haven’t improved matters. Hollywood is no longer remembered except perhaps in Academia.

The Drowned World   Audio drama, released 2009                         Doctor: 1

featuring Steven, Sara

Written by Simon Guerrier.

Informed guess Takes place in East Anglia, soon after Home Truths.

The Guardian of the Solar System   Audio drama, released 2010     Doctor: 1

Featuring Steven, Sara, with the Daleks, Venus (informative mention)

Written by Simon Guerrier,

Informed guess Takes place in East Anglia, soon after The Drowned World.

Doing Time   Short story, published 2003                                              Doctor: 4

featuring Romana, and the Time Lords (informative mention)

Written by Lance Parkin.

Informed guess Takes place in Tellurian space; a reference to the Imperial information net suggests the Second Empire.

The Cold Equations   Audio drama, released 2011                            Doctor: 1

Featuring Steven, Oliver Harper

Written by Simon Guerrier.

Informed guess Takes place above the Earth, during the catastrophe that has caused its depopulation in Home Truths.

Brought to Book   Charity short story, published 2001                            Doctors: 6, 7

featuring Peri, ?the Valeyard, Benny, with the Time Lords (glimpse), and the Alpha Centaurans (informative mention)

Written by Mark Phippen and Paul Leonard.

Informed guess Takes place on Kar-Charrat, some time before The Genocide Machine.

The Singer Not the Song   Comic story, published 2015                         Doctor: 10

Featuring Gabby, with Noobis (glimpse)

Written by Nick Abadzis.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth Station Presley, in Tellurian space.

Without a Paddle   Comic story, published 2018                                      Doctor: 11

Featuring River Song, Alice

Written by Richard Dinnick.

Informed guess Takes place on Hydron, a long while after The Underwater War.

The Genocide Machine   Audio drama, released 2000          Doctor: 7

featuring the Daleks, Ace, Bev Tarrant

Written by Mike Tucker.

Takes place on Kar-Charrat; in The Judas Gift, Bev Tarrant says that she comes from three thousand years in the future of the early twenty-seventh century.

A Day to Yourselves   Illustrated short story, published 2020

                                                            Doctor: 9, with 10, 11, 12, 13 (informative mention)

Written by Dave Rudden.

Arbitrary placement Takes place variously at Christmas, climactically on the planet Ghent.

Bringer of Darkness   Comic story, published 1993                             Doctor: 2

featuring the Daleks, Jamie, Victoria

Written by Scott Gray (as Warwick Gray).

Informed guess Takes place on an unnamed planet, some time after Doctor Who – The Evil of the Daleks, with a brief glimpse of the North Sea coast of England.

Dust Breeding   Audio drama, released 2001                                 Doctor: 7

featuring the Master, Ace, Bev Tarrant

Written by Mike Tucker.

Takes place on and above Duchamp 331; shortly after The Genocide Machine. Bev leaves linear time, being aboard the TARDIS when it dematerialises.

Which Way Out?   Illustrated short story, published 1976                     Doctor: 4

featuring the Daleks, Sarah Jane, with the Time Lords (informative mention)

Written by an anonymous Polystyle writer.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Sarto.

Combat Rock   Novel, published 2002                                             Doctor: 2

featuring Jamie, Victoria

Written by Mick Lewis.

Takes place on Jenggel; dated 5800 CE by Parkin in Ahistory.

The Grief   Comic story, published 1992                                                     Doctor: 7

featuring Ace

Written by Dan Abnett.

Informed guess Takes place on Sorsha. There is a Sol government, the Tellurians seem to be again in an expansionist phase, and the female officers suggest part of the culture that produced the colony in Plague World. Confusingly, Lieutenant Frethil outranks Captain Strauss. Presumably, Ms Frethil is a naval lieutenant with seniority over army captain Ms Strauss.

Arthur C Clarke’s 1951 short story Superiority describes an interstellar power being overrun by a technologically inferior enemy, because it recklessly commits itself to innovation without trialling sufficiently for real-world consequences. I suggest it could be describing the fall of the Second Empire at about this point.

Tomb of Valdemar   Novel, published 2000                           Doctor: 4

featuring K9 II, Romana

Written by Simon Messingham.

Informed guess Takes place above Akellia, shortly after the fall of the Second Empire. Earth, here being called Terra, is again inhabitable.

Masterplan   Audio drama, released 2014                                    Doctor: 8

Featuring the Time Lords, the Master, Liv, with Molly (glimpse)

Written by Matt Fitton.

Takes place in space, before Time’s Horizon.

Time’s Horizon   Audio drama, released 2014                             Doctor: 8

Featuring the Daleks, Liv, Molly, with the Master (glimpse)

Written by Matt Fitton.

Takes place at the “edge of the universe”, “a thousand years” after The Traitor and before Destroy the Infinite. Liv leaves linear time, being aboard the TARDIS when it dematerialises.

Destroy the Infinite   Audio drama, released 2014                          Doctor: 4

Featuring Leela

Written by Nicholas Briggs.

Informed guess Takes place on Delafoss, in a region of Tellurian space described as the Earth Alliance, a term in use from the early twenty-second century to the early seventh millennium. The Tellurians have been fighting the Eminence for fifty years, a longish period not to have been otherwise mentioned, so I’m pushing it into the late sixth millennium.

The Seeds of War   Audio drama, released 2013                          Doctor: 6

Featuring Mel

Written by Matt Fitton and Nicholas Briggs.

Informed guess Takes place in Tellurian space, implicitly after Destroy the Infinite and certainly after Doctor Who – The Terror of the Vervoids.

The Death of Hope   Audio drama, released 2014                       Doctor: 8

Featuring the Time Lords, the Master, Molly

Written by Matt Fitton.

Informed guess Takes place on Heron’s World, implicitly after The Seeds of War.

The Reviled   Audio drama, released 2014                                   Doctor: 8

Featuring the Time Lords, the Master, Liv

Written by Matt Fitton.

Informed guess Takes place on Ramosa, after The Death of Hope.

Rule of the Eminence  Audio drama, released 2014                   Doctor: 8

Featuring the Time Lords, the Master, Liv, Molly

Written by Matt Fitton.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth, including in Brunei and Byzantium, implicitly after The Reviled.

Dr Who and the Daleks II   Illustrated short story, published 1964      Doctor: 1

Featuring the Daleks

Written anonymously.

Informed guess The Daleks have summoned the Doctor to Skaro from Earth, suggesting that by this time they have a degree of time travel. They have also got into trouble with research that has got out of hand: I suggest that this is in the run-up to the campaign launched in Dalek Empire: Invasion of the Daleks. I suggest that the dark-haired Doctor who features in this story is the Doctor’s first incarnation well before he became a fugitive from the Time Lords, and his hair had not yet lost its colour. Indeed, the Doctor had not yet regenerated on television.

Plague World   Comic story, published 1981                                              Doctor: 4

featuring Adric, K9 III

Written by the World Distributors Annual 1982 crew.

Informed guess Takes place on Publius, after the fall of the Second Empire.

The Skrawn Inheritance   Comic story, published 2007                         Doctor: 10

Featuring Martha

Written by Trevor Baxendale.

Informed guess Takes place near and in the Kolox Nebula; self-dated the fifty-ninth century CE.

The Day of the Comet   Audio drama, released 2021            Doctor: 4

Featuring Leela

Written by Jonathan Morris.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Actonese.

The Skull of Sobek   Audio drama, released 2008                             Doctor: 8

Featuring Lucie

Written by Marc Platt.

Informed guess Takes place on Indigo 3. It is a “former Imperial” world, settled by apparently Tellurian descended humans; plausibly after the Second Empire.

Gauntlet of Absolution   Charity short story, published 2020                Doctor: Unbound

Featuring the Time Lords

Written by Kara Dennison.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Idrotha.

The Taste of Death   Audio drama, released 2018                            Doctor: 10

Featuring Rose, the Raxacoricofallapatorians

Written by Helen Goldwyn.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on MXQ1. It is some time after Boom Town, as the Raxacoricofallapatorians have discontinued the practice of capital punishment.

The Devil Birds of Corbo   Illustrated short story, published 1966        Doctor: 1

Written by the World Distributors Annual 1967 crew.

ig Takes place on Corbo. The Council of Earth and Mars sounds a plausible successor to the New Protectorate, which in Tomb of Valdemar fell a century or two after replacing the Second Empire. The Earth-Mars Strong expedition, of four men and two children, leaves linear time, being aboard the TARDIS when it dematerialises.

Blood On Santa’s Claw And Other Stories

Audio drama, released 2019  Doctor: 6

Featuring Werewolves, Peri, with the Time Lords (informative mention)

Written by Nev Fountain.

Takes place variously, including in London, but principally in Tellurian space, culminating in Christmas 5863 CE.

Buying Time  Comic story, published 2012                                             Doctor: 11

Featuring Amy or an Amy ganger, Rory

Written by Trevor Baxendale.

Takes place on Primo Temp; a reference to the Skrawn Inheritance suggests a time close to The Skrawn Inheritance.

The Dalek Generation   Novel, published 2013                        Doctor: 11

Featuring the Daleks

Written by Nicholas Briggs.

Informed guess Takes place during the Earth Alliance, so not too long before Dalek Empire: Invasion of the Daleks, but probably not in Mutter’s Spiral: more likely a region of another galaxy colonised by Tellurians. This is the first time the Dalek Time Controller meets the Doctor, so from the Daleks’ point of view this is in the run-up to the Last Great Time War, and they are potentially interfering in their past.

The Hungry Bomb   Illustrated short story, published 1994                  Doctor: 3

featuring Sarah Jane, the Chelonians

Written by Gareth Roberts.

Takes place on Florana; self-dated June 5968 CE.

Zamper   Novel, published 1995                                                     Doctor: 7

featuring the Chelonians, Benny, Roz, Chris, with Allen Road (glimpse)

Written by Gareth Roberts.

Takes place on Zamper; dated 5995 CE by Parkin in Ahistory.
