Hope Hodgson’s 1912 novel The Night Land
is set on the Earth “millions” of years after the twentieth century CE, when
the sun has “gone dark”. This might well be a conclusion that its surviving
inhabitants have come to, following its expulsion into interstellar space
following The Ark. We may suppose it
was discovered by Tellurian descended humans some time previously and
resettled, possibly for cultural reasons. Presumably they would have rendered
it habitable with artificial suns, which by this time have failed.
