Then Again: The Fourth Aeon

Uranus   Short story, published 2005                                                         Doctor: 7

featuring Mel, the Pakhars, with the Ice Warriors, the Alpha Centaurans, the Arcturans (glimpse)

Written by Craig Hinton

Ends above Uranus; self-datedly three billion years after the forty-first century CE. The higher power whose representative is impersonating an actress cannot, I think, be indentified. Of the Powers in the War in Heaven, Faction Paradox would hardly be sloppy enough to come to a celebrity party disguised as an already-dead celeb, and I shouldn’t think the Enemy would be, either.

The Fate Of The Earth

The Earth has died, been reborn and died again, which is one reason that I have put Frontios before this story. (Mars is a cinder and Jupiter a small star.)

Life After Queth   Short story, published 2006                                        Doctor: 5

featuring Tegan

Written by Matt Kimpton.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Queth.

The Word of Asiries   Illustrated short story, published 1967                  Doctor: 2

Written by the World Distributors Annual 1968 crew.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on an unnamed planet.

Gone Fishing   Short story, published 2006                                  Doctor: Unbound 6

Featuring William/Isaac

Written by Ben Aaronovitch.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth, mostly in “the far future”. Some of the events in this story are, or should be, negated by DS Al Fine.

The Fate Of The Earth

Earth is again settled by humanoids: the descendants of the very wealthy, living an idyllic tribal lifestyle in an engineered ecosystem.

The Quest of the Engineer   Audio drama, released 2020   Doctor: 4

Featuring K9 II, Romana, Adric

Written by Andrew Smith.

Arbitrary placement Takes place in E-space.

Happy as Queeg   Illustrated short story, published 1968                     Doctor: 2

featuring Jamie, Victoria

Written by the World Distributors Annual 1969 crew.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Krill.

This is approximately as far in the future as the first photosynthetic life to develop on Earth, was, in the past.

The Vampires of Crellium   Illustrated short story, published 1976      Doctor: 4

featuring Sarah Jane

Written anonymously.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Crellium, although not, strictly speaking, involving vampires.

The Story Sorters   Short story, published 2017                                        Doctor: 0

Featuring Iris Wildthyme

Written by Paul Driscoll.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Skullvaria.

Psychic Paper Inc Claims Department   Comic story, published 2014   Doctor: 10

Featuring the Sensorites, the Thoros Betans

Written by Emma Price.

Arbitrary placement Takes place in the Psychic Paper Inc Claims Department. That Psychic Paper Inc contacts the TARDIS in flight suggests that it has intratemporal communication facilities, and by implication intratemporal travel facilities.

Gene Wolfe’s twelve volume sequence The Solar Cycle (1980-2002) takes place far in Earth’s future. The sun is cooling –stars are visible in daytime – as is the Earth, causing violent fissuring in its crust. In The Sword of the Lictor (1982) the narrative describes a cliff face two miles high, in which every geological stratum displays the fossilised remains of civilisation. Three and a half kilometres of anthropic geology clearly indicates a very long time indeed by twenty-first century standards: I think it can be placed here, after a post Frontios resettlement. At the end of The Urth of the New Sun (1987), the sun is rejuvenated by the placing of a white hole in it.

Doomland   Comic story, published 2012                                                  Doctor: 11

Featuring Amy or an Amy ganger, Rory

Written by Eddie Robson.

Arbitrary placement Takes place on Vamisash.

Dark Planet   Game book, published 2007                                            Doctor: 10

Featuring Martha

Written by Davey Moore.

Informed guess Takes place on Earth, at a far temporal distance from any other time we have seen it.

The Fate Of The Earth

Earth has stopped rotating in relation to the Sun, and dayside and nightside Tellurian populations are in conflict.

And this seems a handy spot to place Hothouse, Brian Aldiss’s 1962 novel of a non-rotating Earth. By now, only a few Tellurians still inhabit a vegetation-dominated world, and the sun is again expanding and unstable
